Math Continues to be Hard

George Will posted an article this morning in the Washington Post entitled Amend the Constitution to Control Federal Spending, and it had this little gem in the comments section:

Yet another conservative using the Great Recession and its aftermath to promote lunacy.

Under President Obama spending due to policy changes has fallen. The cause of most of the increase in our national debt under Obama is due to Automatic Stabilizers (that is, the automatic fall in revenue and increase in spending that occurs during recessions independent of policy changes).

Here are the details: FISCAL FACT CHECKER: HOW MUCH HAS SPENDING INCREASED UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA? (a fact check of the claim: “Obama spending binge never happened” {Link})

Yes, Obama is cleaning up another mess left over from the previous Republican administration.

The only result of Will’s suggestion would be draconian cuts during recessions and/or wars (because of the fall in revenue and/or increase in military spending), just when the economy needs support.

Clicking on the link leads to a post neatly called: FISCAL FACT CHECKER: HOW MUCH HAS SPENDING INCREASED UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA?

Which is a cleverly hidden way of fudging the numbers to support his spending profligacy.  In fact, due to restraint by his congress spending UNDER Obama has stayed level.  However, the first budget opportunity he had baselined the stimulus package, meaning that spending in his first year increased by over 18 percent in nominal terms (find the data I used here).  So, claiming that spending under Obama has only increased 2.4 percent is a clever method of fudging the numbers… Instead of calculating between presidents, they only calculated within their terms (and then compared between them), thus leaving out the largest increase in government outlays of the past generation.

We are bankrupt, not only financially, but also educationally.  The general population’s inability to intuit basic math is terrifying.
